Frixion Eraser Test

Sunday, August 11, 2013
A few days ago I posted about my new love with Frixion markers.  I was asked whether any eraser would work, so I decided to test some. I’m posting today with the results of my eraser test.

I’m going to start with how the markers erase when writing then move on to how they erase when they are being used for coloring.  I think that I’ll be using my markers mostly for grading papers and modeling work on the data projector.  Markers and pens just show up better than pencils.

For this test, I grabbed some erasers I found laying around my house.  I included the eraser that comes on the cap of the marker.  In my opinion, it works better than the rest.  The best part is the eraser is angled which makes it easier to use.

Here are the results.  All of the erasers worked pretty well.

Now for the coloring test.  I like to add a lot of colorful diagrams to my science journal.  In fact, I sometimes refer to my science journal as my coloring book.  With that in mind, I needed to see how the Frixion markers would hold up because I do tend to make mistakes.  I intentionally used the darker colors from the set since those would be the hardest to erase.

This is where I noticed a HUGE difference in the performance of the different erasers!!  The eraser on the marker itself is the clear winner.  You can still see faint traces of what I erased but it works good enough for me!  I noticed the other erasers had worn down the paper and if I had continued to erase, I would have created a hole.  The Frixion eraser did not damage the paper at all.  I am amazed!  I’m seriously considering getting the Frixion colored pencils.  Not that I need them - I just WANT them.

On a side note, check out some of the fuzzies left behind by the other erasers.  Frixion erasers don’t wear down so they don’t leave fuzzies behind.

Frixion markers are expensive but they are worth it.  They had to have been made with teachers in mind, or at least, with me in mind.  The cheapest I have found them so far is at Amazon.  Click on the picture below if you want to go check them out for yourself.

Disclaimer: This is not a paid endorsement, but maybe it should be. ; )   I bought these markers after stumbling across them on the internet.  I’m just really, really impressed.

I’m Lovin’ It – Frixion Markers

I’m linking up with Covered in Glitter and Glue for What I’m Loving Wednesday.

Some other bloggers mentioned they loved using Frixion erasable gel pens so I checked them out.  All I could find locally was a 2 pack of black.  I snatched them up because I knew if I loved the pens I could get color ones from Amazon.  Amazon has everything!

I fell in love with these pens!  So, I hoped onto Amazon to order some in pretty colors.  Low and behold, Pilot also makes Frixion markers and color pencils!!  Who knew?! This is what I ended up buying.

They are the cheapest pens and markers around but they are definitely cool!  I tend to make mistakes (A LOT!) so having pens and markers that really erase is worth the expense.

Frixion markers work great in planners.

Here’s how my planner looked after I finished erasing.  Dang – these markers erase well!!

In addition to using my new markers in my planner, I plan on using them in my interactive notebooks.  They are bright, erasable, and don’t bleed.  Check out this math entry:

Ooops. No biggie!

Here are some quick links if you want to go check out these markers for yourself.  These picture links will take you to Amazon.

Is anyone else in love with these pens?

UPDATE -
The Frixion pens and markers have built-in erasers on the caps that never wear down.  Gotta love that!  However, I did a little experiment this morning to find out if any eraser would work.  The short answer is yes!  However, I found out that some erasers work better than others.  If you're interested, I can do another post to show (with pictures!) the results of my eraser experiment.

Bye-Bye Google Reader, Hello Feedly

Friday, June 21, 2013

Google has decided to pull the plug on Google Reader.  As of July 1st, we will no longer be able to enjoy our favorite blogs through Google Reader.   If you are like me and depend on Google reader, I have found a solution for you.  Drum roll please…

It’s Feedly!  I’ve been using Feedly for a little while and what I like the most about it is the ability to change the way you view your feeds.  Check out these options:

I’m a visual person so magazine and card views are my favorites.  With both options, you get a small preview.  If you’re interested in reading the entire post, click on the title and it instantly pops up.  If there are posts you are not interested in, click on “mark as read” and they disappear. There are a lot of options with Feedly and it’s easy to use.  The best part is it’s available on iOS, Android, and through a web browser so you can use it on your phone, tablet, and computer.  If you’re interested, import your Google Reader feeds into Feedly Cloud and you’ll be seamlessly moved over.
When I first heard that Google Reader was retiring I was not at all thrilled.  However, I think Feedly will fit my needs perfectly!

I’ve been BOOed!

Tuesday, October 16, 2012
I’ve been busy and got a little behind on my email, blog, etc.  Eeek!  When I checked in, I noticed that I had been BOOed – twice!

I’d like to thank Leah from Learning 4 Keeps and Holly from Fourth Grade Flipper.  Thanks ladies – you made my week!

I’m a book nerd so I’m sharing some of my favorite read aloud Halloween stories.

Seinfeld’s Halloween is hysterical!  I LOVE it!!  It’s not necessarily appropriate for younger kids but it’s a fun read.

This is one of my old favs, but I think it’s out of print which is too bad.  It’s modeled after the 12 Days of Christmas.  My kids always have a hoot singing along with me.

I read this one for the 1st time a few days ago.  Scarum Fair is a book of poetry so I wasn’t really sure if I would like it.  My class loved it and described it as being disgustingly funny.  I’ll be sharing this one again next year.

Hallowiener is my all time favorite.  It’s just a cute story about acceptance. Dav Pilkey does a great job with this one.
Now I’m off to BOO some bloggy buddies.

Must-Have Pencil Sharpener

Tuesday, August 21, 2012
There’s a new pencil sharpener in my classroom and I’m in love!  Seriously.

I got this little baby in the mail from Classroom Friendly Supplies. I immediately set it up and sharpened dozens of pencils right away. I sharpened and both of my kids sharpened.  We sharpened all kinds of pencils.
New pencils.
Old pencils.
Quality pencils.
Cheap pencils.
Even plastic coated pencils.
This sharpener worked perfectly!  Every. Single. Time.  It completely exceeded my expectations and my kids thought it was cool.

The Classroom Friendly sharpener was easy for all of us to use and worked like a charm.  Check out this video to see how easy it is to use.
Video by tdecoff.

This sharpener only sharpens standard-sized pencils and I didn’t have much luck sharpening map pencils.

You can’t over-sharpen with this sharpener.  Believe me – I tried!  That makes it kid proof.  No more wasting time at the pencil sharpener sharpening until the lead breaks so that even more sharpening can be done.  Does anyone else have students that do that?!

I love it and my teaching buddies love it.  In fact, I plan to get another so I’ll have even more sharpening power.  This is a great sharpener for everyone’s classroom, but don’t take my word for it.  Hop on over to Classroom Friendly Supplies and snag one up for yourselves.

Rockin’ Resources Linky

Wednesday, July 25, 2012
I’m linking up with Kelley from Teacher Idea Factory to share some classroom resources that I can live without.

Kelley has already shared the Creative Mathematics books from Kim Sutton.  These are my go to books for meaningful math practice activities.  Here are two of my favorites:

Another Kim Sutton product that I love is her dice.  These place value decahedron dice are my faves!  These dice are awesome for practicing expanded notation.  Each color die represents a different place value and go up through the hundred thousands place.

I also LOVE anything by Dinah Zike!!  I have nearly every book she’s published that applies to 3rd grade.  I even have some that don’t because her ideas can be modified for any grade.  These are my favorites:

There are so many things you can do with foldables. Here are some pix I took at the Dinah Zike booth at a recent math convention.  I hope the pictures don’t make you dizzy.  I was juggling a 50 lb. backpack while I was taking these pictures with my phone.

Kelley at Teacher Idea Factory is having a giveaway with her favorite classroom items.  Go check it out and enter for a chance to win some awesome stuff.
Don’t forget to enter my giveaway if you haven’t already.
